Speech Development Disorder Day

Speech Development Disorder Day

For several years now, there have been international initiatives to raise awareness of speech and language disorders (SES). This year's campaign slogan is: #SES-Schau hin! #DLDseeMe

The Berlin-based practice Logolo would like to participate this year and is providing information online.

But what exactly is a SLI and why is it so important to learn about it? A speech and language impairment (SLI) is a processing disorder that makes it difficult for children, adolescents or adults to speak and/or understand language. This disorder is often associated with dyslexia and other learning disorders.

It is important for those affected to receive the right support from professionals such as teachers or speech therapists. A recent study has shown that 7.5% of all children have an SLD that is not attributable to a biomedical condition (Norbury et al. 2016). That is approximately 2 children per school class. Since untreated SES can also have consequences into adolescence and adulthood (behavioural problems, depression), it is important to recognise and treat this disorder. In addition, a better understanding of how to deal with SES by adults and peers can help to avoid negative consequences.

To raise awareness of this disorder, we are celebrating SES Day. Please speak to our colleagues at Logolo in the practice if you have any questions about SES. And spread the word!

Thank you very much!

What is speech therapy? - Frequently asked questions and answers

When it comes to learning language, there are enormous differences even in childhood. Some learn language very quickly, while others need more time. Problems arise in understanding grammar, among other things, but also in learning vocabulary. A particularly well-known condition is dyslexia, a reading and spelling disability that makes it difficult for those affected to convert spoken language into written language and vice versa.
