What is speech therapy?

What is speech therapy? - Frequently asked questions and answers

Speech therapy is a treatment for language, speech, voice and swallowing disorders.

Speech therapy and language

When it comes to learning language, there are enormous differences even in childhood. Some children learn language very quickly, while others need more time. Problems arise in understanding grammar, among other things, but also in learning vocabulary. Dyslexia is a particularly well-known disorder. This is a reading and spelling disability in which those affected find it difficult to convert spoken language into written language (and vice versa). In general, speech therapy should be considered in cases of language disorders.

Speech therapy and speaking

A speech disorder or speech impediment describes problems with the articulation of speech sounds. This manifests itself, for example, in lisping and stuttering. In some cases, it can be caused by damage to the brain, for example after a stroke.

Speech therapy and voice

People who work in professions that require them to speak a lot (e.g. teachers, educators, receptionists, telephone operators) are particularly at risk of overstraining their voices. This means that they find it difficult to keep their voices going throughout the entire working day. Voice therapy is particularly appropriate if you have a voice disorder. This means that your voice has changed permanently. This can manifest itself, for example, in hoarseness, strained or toneless speech. In addition, some sounds can no longer be held for long periods of time. Our therapists also offer trans*people appropriate and individual support on their journey.

Speech therapy and swallowing disorders

There are often neurologically based problems with swallowing, such as after a stroke or in Parkinson's disease. Similarly, surgery in the mouth, jaw, throat or larynx area can cause a swallowing disorder.

Why is speech therapy necessary?

There can be many different reasons for this. For example, we help children improve their language skills. As an adult, you will receive speech therapy if you have had a stroke and your speech and/or hearing have been affected. The area of the brain responsible for speech may also have been affected. We can also treat other neurological disorders; people with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other conditions can also find help with us.

What happens during a speech therapy session?

First, an initial assessment is carried out. In this initial consultation, the therapists discuss the problem with the patient. A treatment plan is then developed based on this discussion. At the same time, the patient's environment must also be taken into account in the therapy. No matter how good the treatment is, if the environment works against it, goals will be achieved much more slowly. The therapy sessions are planned together. The following sessions involve the therapy itself, which varies depending on the complaint.

How long does the therapy last?

It varies greatly. Depending on the diagnosis, treatments can last 30, 45 or 60 minutes. On average, they last 45 minutes. These treatments can then take place once or twice a week. Depending on the severity, the duration of therapy can be a few weeks or even several months.
